Amethysts are the lilac variety of the Quartz group of minerals. Their deep and rich violet hues combined with a rating of 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness, make them highly suitable for aesthetic and statement jewels.
Most Amethysts come from Brazil where there are extensive deposits of this mineral. Brazil is also known for producing some of the finest pieces of this mineral. Other sources include Russia, Zambia, Mexico, and Madagascar.
In astrology, amethysts have long been known to cure addiction and have even been used as drinking vessels by ancient Greeks, following the belief that the stone could prevent intoxication. Amethysts are also popular substitutes for blue sapphires and as such, are said to calm restlessness, provide mental clarity, and improve physical well-being.
