Collection: Opals

Unlike most gemstones, Opals are a mineraloid (mineral-like substance) composed of hydrated silica known for their distinctive ‘Play of Colour’ – an optical phenomenon that occurs when light enters the stone and is diffracted by the tiny spheres of silica within the stone, which causes light to split into its component colours, creating a unique display of colours that can include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. This play of colour is also referred to as the “fire” of the opal.

Opals are usually white or black, but hues of orange, green, blue, and pink have also been found. These stones have been mined for centuries in Ethiopia, Mexico, Australia, and the USA. The Australian-origin Opals, however, are known to be of the best quality.

Astrologically, Opals are associated with Venus, and are known to be helpful in creative ventures, as well as in social and financial pursuits. They are also believed to improve one’s physical health – preventing sleeping and hormonal disorders.
