The colourless variety of the Corundum minerals - white sapphires are prized for their brilliance and scintillation, because of which they are often considered alternatives to diamonds. In general, most white sapphires come with a hint of blue or yellow, and those that are truly colourless, command a higher value.

Sri Lanka is one of the major sources of origin for white sapphires, and pieces originating here are known to be of superior quality. Other origins include Madagascar, Thailand, and Myanmar (Burma).
